How Hunter Region farms use Hunter Blue Metal quarry products
Hunter Blue Metal is a Merriwa-based quarry supplier delivering aggregate, sand, road base and specialty rock to farms across the Hunter Region and NSW. Our quarry products for agriculture are used for farm road construction, paddock drainage, stockyard surfacing, dam works, shed and silo pads, vineyard access and riverbank protection — from small hobby farms through to large dairy, beef, viticulture and grain operations.
Quarry products for farm roads and tracks
Farm roads and tracks need a base that compacts firmly, drains freely and handles tractor, truck and stock traffic across all weather. For most farm road applications we recommend 20mm unspec road base laid 100–150mm thick over the formation, then top-dressed with crusher dust for a smooth surface.
For high-traffic farm access — feedlot approach roads, dairy lane ways, abattoir access — we recommend stepping up to TfNSW-spec DGB20 road base. Read our buyer's guide on which road base do you need for a side-by-side comparison.

Paddock drainage, dam works and silo bases
Quarry products underpin most of the drainage and water-management infrastructure on a working farm. Clean 20mm or 40mm drainage aggregate sits around subsoil drains and culvert outlets to keep water flowing. Crusher dust and bedding sand form the low-permeability base for farm dams and the protective layer beneath dam liners. Gabion rock and spalls provide armoured edges where dams meet creek lines.
For silo, shed and feed-storage pads, 20mm aggregate or DGB20 compacts to a load-bearing surface that supports filled silos and grain bunkers without settlement.
Stockyards, feedlots and shed bases
Stockyard floors need a product that's firm under hoof, soft enough not to bruise stock, and easy to keep clean. Well-compacted crusher dust is the standard answer — it gives a stable surface that drains, suppresses mud and is gentle on cattle and horse hooves. For high-traffic cattle races and loading ramps, we add a 20mm aggregate layer beneath the crusher dust top dressing.
Larger feedlots and dairies typically use a layered approach: 65mm minus for the formation, 20mm road base for the structural layer, and crusher dust as the wearing surface. The same approach works for horse arenas and equine training surfaces across the Upper Hunter horse country.

Riverbank protection, erosion control and slope stabilisation
Hunter Region farms with creek and river frontage need rock products that resist flood and stock impact. 100/200mm gabion rock works well in wire-mesh gabion baskets for retaining structures and bank-toe protection. For exposed banks subject to flood velocity, 200/600mm armour rock interlocks to resist scour.
For major waterway and large-scale erosion projects, 1 metre+ oversized rock provides primary armour. Read more in our guide on rock products for civil works.
Vineyards, horticulture and viticulture access
The Hunter Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions, and quarry products underpin much of the vineyard infrastructure — inter-row tracks, winery hardstands, cellar door car parks and grape-receival pads. For vineyard row access we typically supply 20mm unspec road base topped with crusher dust to give a tractor-stable, low-dust surface that does not shed sharp stones onto fruit.
For horticultural operations and orchards, drainage aggregate around root zones and crusher dust paths between rows are common applications. The same DGB20 + crusher dust combination used on dairies works well for market-garden hardstands and packing-shed approaches.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about quarry products for Hunter Region farms.
What quarry products do farmers most commonly buy from Hunter Blue Metal?
Aggregate and road base for paddock roads, drainage rock around storage sheds and silos, sand and crusher dust for stockyards, and gabion or specialty rock for riverbank protection and slope stabilisation are the most common farm orders. Specific products and quantities vary by farm size, livestock type and terrain.
Do you deliver to working farms across the Hunter Region?
Yes. Next-day bulk delivery is available to farm sites across the Hunter Valley, Upper Hunter, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone, Merriwa and surrounding NSW. Phone 1300 150 777 for a quote that includes delivery to your address.
What aggregate size suits a farm road?
For all-weather farm roads we typically recommend a 20mm road base, optionally topped with crusher dust. For high-traffic sections such as feedlot access, dairy lanes and heavily-used tracks, 65mm minus as fill beneath the road base improves drainage and reduces rutting.
Can I order small quantities for repair work or larger volumes for new builds?
We supply both, from single tipper loads (around 17 tonnes) suited to small repairs, all the way to full B-double loads for larger feedlot, dam or vineyard projects. Both options run from our Merriwa quarry with next-day delivery.
