Building the backbone of Australia's transport network
Our rail construction products are sourced from our own quarry. Every product is consistent in quality and grading, meeting the specifications required for mainline construction, siding works, maintenance programs and major infrastructure projects. If you need a product we don’t usually stock, our sourcing team can find it for you through our network of local quarries and suppliers.
What Are Rail Construction Materials?
Rail construction materials are the quarry products and aggregates used to build and maintain railway infrastructure. From the subgrade up to the track surface, each layer serves a specific engineering purpose and requires materials manufactured to precise specifications.
Rail ballast is the crushed rock that sits beneath and around railway sleepers. It distributes the load from passing trains, provides drainage, and allows for track geometry adjustments. Quality ballast is angular, hard-wearing, and sized to specific gradations, typically 32/65mm for mainline applications.
Below the ballast sits the formation layer, which is strengthened with capping materials. Rail capping provides a stable platform for the ballast and prevents fines from migrating upward into the track structure. Gabion rock and larger specialty rock products are used for drainage, erosion protection and retaining structures along rail corridors. For fine materials and crusher dust products, see our sand and dust range.
The right materials for your rail project depend on the track classification, engineering specifications and compliance requirements. Using the correct products ensures structural performance, safety and long-term durability.

Rail Ballast (32/65mm)
Our 32/65mm rail ballast is a premium crushed rock product manufactured for railway track construction and maintenance. It provides excellent load distribution, drainage and stability beneath railway sleepers, making it essential for mainline, siding and yard applications across NSW.
Applications: Track bed construction for mainline and branch line railways. Siding and yard construction for freight and passenger operations. Track maintenance and ballast replacement programs. Level crossing construction and upgrades.
Specifications: 32mm to 65mm particle size range. Angular, hard-wearing crushed rock with high resistance to abrasion and weathering. Suitable for heavy axle load applications. Supplied to ARTC specifications. Railway ballast is covered by AS 2758.7.

Gabion Rock and Spalls (100/200mm)
Our 100/200mm & 100/300 gabion rock and spalls are large-format crushed rock products used for drainage, stabilisation and retaining structures along rail corridors. These hard-wearing materials are ideal for erosion protection and foundation works in demanding rail environments.
Applications: Gabion basket fill for retaining walls and embankment protection. Drainage structures and culvert headwalls. Erosion protection along rail corridors and waterways. Foundation rock for bridges and structures.
Specifications: 100mm to 200mm particle size range. Angular, interlocking rock suitable for gabion baskets and bulk placement applications. Aggregates for gabion baskets are covered by AS 2758.4.

Rail Capping
Rail capping is a graded aggregate material used to strengthen the formation layer beneath the ballast. It provides a stable, well-drained platform that prevents fines from contaminating the ballast and extends the service life of the track structure.
Applications: Formation strengthening for new track construction. Track renewal and rehabilitation projects. Separation layer between subgrade and ballast. Drainage improvement in poor ground conditions.
Specifications: Graded aggregate with controlled fines content. Compacts to a dense, stable layer with good drainage characteristics.

General Fill and Drainage Aggregates
We supply a full range of general fill materials and drainage aggregates to support every stage of rail construction. From subgrade preparation to finished drainage systems, our products meet the requirements of rail infrastructure projects across NSW.
Applications: Subgrade preparation and earthworks. Drainage systems and filter layers. Access road construction and maintenance. General site works and compound areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Rail ballast is the crushed rock that forms the track bed beneath and around railway sleepers. It serves several critical functions: distributing the load from passing trains to the formation below, providing drainage to keep water away from the track structure, allowing for track geometry adjustments, and resisting movement of the sleepers under load. Quality ballast is essential for safe, reliable rail operations.
Our standard rail ballast is 32/65mm, which is suitable for mainline and heavy-haul applications. This size provides the ideal balance of load distribution, drainage and stability for most rail construction and maintenance projects. If you need a different specification, contact our team to discuss your requirements.
Yes. Hunter Blue Metal supplies rail construction materials that meet Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) specifications. Our products are suitable for government rail projects, network maintenance programs and commercial developments requiring specification compliance. Contact our team for availability and documentation.
Yes. Our experienced drivers are familiar with rail corridor access requirements and can deliver to sites with restricted access. We work with contractors and project managers to coordinate deliveries around track possessions and work windows. Contact us to discuss your site access requirements.
Rail capping is a graded aggregate material placed on top of the formation, beneath the ballast. It strengthens the formation layer, provides a stable platform for the ballast, improves drainage and prevents fine particles from migrating up into the track structure. Capping extends the service life of the track and reduces maintenance requirements.
The right materials depend on your project scope, track classification and any specification requirements. Our experienced team can recommend the appropriate products based on your project details. Whether you’re building new track, undertaking maintenance or working on a major infrastructure project, get in touch with your requirements and we’ll point you in the right direction.
