PHF Coldmix Pothole Fill: All-Weather Permanent Pothole Repair

Fix potholes in the rain, and reopen the road as soon as you compact it

A polymer-modified cold asphalt for permanent pothole, utility-cut and edge-break repair. No hot-mix truck, no cure wait, and no weather window.

Hunter Blue Metal supplies PHF Coldmix to councils, roading contractors, utility crews and property managers across the Hunter Region and NSW. PHF cures through compaction rather than time, so it installs in rain, on wet asphalt or into water-filled potholes, and carries traffic the moment it is compacted. One worker with hand tools can complete a typical repair.

What is PHF Coldmix?

PHF is a high-quality polymer-modified cold asphalt engineered for permanent pothole and asphalt repair. Developed in New Zealand and proven across the South Pacific in extreme hot and cold climates, it differs from conventional cold-mix products in four ways that matter on site.

Cures through compaction, not time. Hot mix cures as it cools and traditional cold mixes set slowly over hours. PHF carries traffic the moment it is compacted into place.

Polymer-modified for flexibility and strength. The polymer additive keeps the mix flexible through temperature swings and traffic loading without cracking, and strong enough to be a permanent repair rather than a temporary patch.

No bitumen emulsion required. Nothing to wait on before traffic, and simpler storage.

Works in wet potholes. The mix bonds to wet asphalt or concrete, so repairs proceed in the rain, including into potholes holding water.

Where PHF Coldmix is used

Permanent pothole and asphalt repair in all weather, with no cure wait and immediate traffic.

PHF Coldmix is built for the maintenance and repair segment of road and pavement work. Use it anywhere a permanent, all-weather patch is needed on an existing asphalt or concrete surface.

  • Potholes in asphalt or concrete. Carparks, driveways, council roads, industrial hardstands.
  • Utility cut reinstatement. Permanent finish after trench work by water, power, gas or telco contractors.
  • Deteriorating asphalt repairs. Patching failed sections without a full asphalt overlay.
  • Speed humps and ramps. Building new humps or repairing existing ones.
  • Water channels and edge breaks. Kerb-edge failures and drainage channel repairs.

PHF is not a substitute for hot-mix asphalt in new road construction or large resurfacing works; those still call for a hot-mix truck and rolling crew. PHF wins on the maintenance and small-repair jobs where hot-mix logistics do not make sense.

How to install PHF Coldmix

Designed for one worker with hand tools

No specialised plant is required for typical pothole and utility-cut jobs.

  1. Pour pre-mixed PHF into the pothole, slightly overfilling.
  2. Compact with a car tyre for small repairs, or a plate compactor for larger holes.
  3. Drive on it. The repair carries traffic the moment compaction is complete, with no cure wait.

Pack sizes and how to order

Bucketed, sling-bagged or drummed, for one-off repairs, depot programs or in-house manufacture.

20 kg bucket

Best for: One-off potholes, utility-cut reinstatements, keep-in-the-ute repair kits, small maintenance jobs.

Coverage: One 20 kg bucket fills a pothole roughly 500 x 500 mm x 30 mm deep. For deeper holes, stack and compact in layers.

Shelf life: 9 to 12 months sealed in cool, dry storage. The rigid resealable bucket means unused product stores cleanly with no scrap.

1 tonne sling bag

Best for: Council maintenance depots, roading contractors and larger repair programs where a stack of 20 kg buckets would be inefficient to handle.

Format: Sling bags for forklift or crane handling. Store at the depot and draw down as needed.

Ordering: Ask about pricing and scheduled delivery for programme-based supply.

Pickup or delivery across NSW

PHF Coldmix is available for pickup from our Merriwa quarry or our Rutherford office, or delivery across the Hunter Region, Newcastle, the Central Coast and broader NSW. Ordering PHF alongside your regular aggregate or road base order combines shipping, so your maintenance stock arrives on the same run as your next construction supply.

For council maintenance depots and roading contractors running larger repair programs, ask about 1-tonne sling-bag pricing and delivery scheduling. For raw binder concentrate for in-house manufacture, we can advise on mixing ratio and process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Permanent. Field results across NZ and the South Pacific show PHF performing as well as or better than hot-mix asphalt for pothole repair. It is not a temporary cold patch that needs replacing with hot mix later.

Yes. The mix bonds to wet asphalt or concrete and can be installed into potholes that are filled with water. This is the single biggest advantage over hot mix for road maintenance crews.

Immediately. PHF cures through compaction rather than time, so once you have compacted the fill the road can be reopened to traffic straight away.

For a typical pothole repair, a shovel and a way to compact the fill, often just a car tyre driven over the compacted mix a few times. For larger holes or utility-cut reinstatement, a small plate compactor. No hot-mix trucks, no heaters, no specialised gear.

One 20 kg bucket fills a pothole approximately 500 mm x 500 mm x 30 mm deep. For deeper holes, stack and compact in layers. For very large repairs, order the 1-tonne sling bag.

Sealed 20 kg buckets have a 9 to 12 month shelf life in a cool, dry environment. The resealable bucket means unused product stores cleanly and can be used later.

You can pick up PHF Coldmix from our Merriwa quarry (4074 Golden Hwy, Merriwa NSW 2329) or our Rutherford office (Unit 8/42 Spitfire Pl, Rutherford NSW 2320).
